Eligibility before job search

Residence permit to look for work in Sweden

Sweden does not have one general job-seeker permit for everyone. Official routes include a permit after completing qualifying higher education in Sweden and a separate route for people outside Sweden with studies equivalent to a second-cycle qualification. Each route has its own requirements.

    What to check

    • Identify whether your route is based on completed studies in Sweden or an overseas second-cycle qualification.
    • Read the exact Migrationsverket route before collecting documents.
    • Confirm passport, qualification, maintenance, insurance and application-location requirements.
    • Do not book travel or assume work rights from the page title alone.
    • When you find a job, check the separate work-permit process that applies.

After completing higher education in Sweden

A person who completed qualifying higher education in Sweden may be able to apply for a residence permit to look for work or investigate starting a business. The official page also explains a route connected to studies in another EU country with a qualifying period in Sweden.

    Highly qualified applicants outside Sweden

Migrationsverket has a separate route for people who completed studies equivalent to a second-cycle qualification and want to come to Sweden to look for work or explore starting a business. This is a defined eligibility route, not a general permit for any job seeker.

Finding a job and having permission to work are separate

A residence permit to look for work does not mean every later job automatically qualifies for a work permit. Check the employment and permit requirements once you have an offer.

    Common questions

Can anyone apply for a Swedish job-seeker visa?

Can I call it a work permit?

No. A permit to look for work and a permit to perform a specific job are different.
