Law and agreement are separate checks

    Working hours in Sweden

The Working Hours Act regulates working time, on-call time, breaks and rest for work carried out in Sweden, with exceptions. A collective agreement can replace all or parts of the Act, while EU minimum protections still matter. Check both the law and the agreement covering your workplace.

    What to check

    • Ordinary weekly hours and schedule
    • Overtime rules and compensation
    • Daily and weekly rest
    • Breaks, on-call time and night work
    • Which collective agreement, if any, replaces parts of the Act

The Act is the starting point

The Swedish Work Environment Authority explains that the Act covers how much one may work per day, week and year, as well as on-call time, preparedness, breaks and night rest. Special rules apply in some situations, including for people under 18.

A collective agreement can change the working-time rules

The authority states that a collective agreement can replace the Act or parts of it. Ask for the agreement name and the sections that apply to your role and schedule rather than assuming the statutory default controls every detail.

What to clarify before accepting an offer

Ask for the normal schedule, how changes are notified, how overtime is approved and compensated, and whether travel or on-call time is included. Keep the answer in the contract or referenced agreement where possible.

    Common questions

Does one working-hour rule apply to every Swedish job?

No. Exceptions and collective agreements can change the applicable setup.

Can an employer ignore rest requirements through any contract?

The authority explains that collective agreements operate within the legal and EU framework. An individual summary cannot determine your case.

Where should I verify the schedule?

Use the employment contract, the applicable collective agreement and the official Working Hours Act guidance.
