2026 official household-cost guidance

    Cost of living in Sweden

Start with the Swedish Consumer Agency's 2026 household-cost estimates, then add your real housing, transport, healthcare and other personal costs. The official estimates are planning examples, not statistics, and cover only about 40% of total household expenditure.

    What to check

    • Add actual rent or mortgage and housing fees.
    • Add commuting and other transport.
    • Use the Consumer Agency estimate for food and household categories as a starting point.
    • Add healthcare, dental care, medicine and childcare where relevant.
    • Keep a monthly buffer for one-off and annual costs.

    What the official estimate includes

    • Food, clothing and personal hygiene
    • Household consumables and equipment
    • Internet, mobile and media services
    • Home insurance, household electricity, water and wastewater under stated assumptions

    What it does not include

Large costs such as housing and transport are excluded. Healthcare, medicine, childcare, holidays, hotels, restaurant visits, education and gifts are also outside the standard estimate. Your personal budget must add them.

Compare a job offer with your own budget

Use gross salary, the official tax calculator and your realistic monthly costs. A national cost example cannot tell you whether one offer is sufficient in a particular city or household.

    Common questions

Is the official household estimate an average?

No. The Consumer Agency describes it as an estimate for budget planning, not statistics on actual spending.

    Does it include rent?

No. Housing is one of the major costs you must add yourself.

Are the figures the same in every city?

The standard assumptions are not a city-by-city price guide. Use your actual housing and travel costs.
